Kalkfeld, where the Primary School Garden project started in 2007, is a small, forgotten village in Namibia, in southern Africa, about 200 km northwest of the capital, Windhoek. It has roughly 3000 inhabitants. Since the independence and the end of apartheid in the year 1990, the few houses of the former white part of town have fallen into disrepair. What remained is the so-called location, the black district, with very simple houses and self-built clay and sheet metal huts. The unemployment rate in Kalkfeld is around 90 percent, and the AIDS rate is alarmingly high. There are hardly any perspectives for the youth. Many children are AIDS orphans and socially neglected. At the Primary School, they are cared for during the day, receive education, receive a warm meal, and learn how to garden.
