“There has been an ongoing problem at our school for years. This problem is the lack of a suitable facility that provides our school community with space, shade, and protection from the elements of nature. Since our school does not have a school hall, all activities, celebrations, and inter-class lessons take place outdoors, with only one tree providing shade,” says Deputy Principal Hermanus van Ster, describing the situation in early 2020. As a solution to this long-cherished desire for a school hall, he proposes roofing over the schoolyard.
We were very impressed by this idea of the school, which was never expressed before, and the understandable need for a school hall for teaching across classes and currently also for more distanced teaching. As luck would have it, we got to know a Namibian locksmith at the same evening, with whom we planned the auditorium over the next few months and were able to complete the raw construction at the beginning of 2021. Thanks also to the commitment and generous financial help of Alexa Heine and her colleagues from the Inner Wheel Club NRW. In May 2021 we were able to complete the auditorium and hand it over to the school with a paved floor, including a drawing, forecourt, and painted and electrified area.
In addition to the desired improvements, such as more protected space for school activities and lessons even under corona conditions for the whole school, the school hall has become the largest room in Kalkfeld. “A landmark,” proudly reports the principal, who is also rented out to the Kalkfeld community for special events, thus helping the school to help itself.
